Virginia Tech Class of 2013

Well folks I was just accepted into Virgina Tech from the wait list. I previously said I was going to Georgia Tech but honestly I can’t ask for my parents to pay for that out of state tuition. So I guess this means I’m a Hokie, time to get a new t-shirt (anyone need a Georgia tech t-shirt?).

Although Georgia Tech is the better engineering school, Virginia Tech has the perfect program for me. I have a deep interest in Mechanical Engineering and VT has a program where if I study engineering along with German (my second favorite language next to English) I can participate in the Darmstadt-Virginia Tech program. Where during my senior year I can study at the Universitat in Darmstadt and upon my completion I will receive a full undergrad degree from each school (2 flippin undergrads when I’m 22!).

Save money, better program for myself and I still get to stick around with some of my high school friends.

(p.s. Sorry Georgia Tech, I still wish I could go to your school but you cost to much. Maybe I will see you for Grad school or something)

Yuthud Oberdick $1,000 Scholarship

Yuthud Oberdick was a former teacher at my high school for 25 years before she retired in 1998. As a tribute to her Chantilly High School created the “Yuthud Oberdick Scholarship.” This scholarship rewards one student each year who showed an interest in social studies and the main qualification is that the selected student must have been enrolled in regular social studies classes throughout high school.

First off I haven’t been able to find scholarships for myself at all this year. Most of the larger ones are based on financial aid, which I don’t qualify for (my EFC is way to high, darn you No.Va), or smaller scholarships which don’t depend on financial aid but has a VERY large pool of students and is dependent on the best written essay (I suck at writing). But when I saw this scholarship at my school I was surprised, I actually do enjoy social studies but for some reason or another I have never taken Honors/AP history classes in High School. Mind you I haven’t won it (yet) but I think I actually have a good chance at winning this scholarship with the letters of recommendations I got from different teachers in the social studies  department. The winner of this scholarship is announced in June so hopefully I get it.

So to all you naysayers out there about me not taking AP/Honors history in high school I have a very short and humble response to you, eat it.

New Shan

For some odd reason or another I’ve decided to change my daily schedule and life style. Here is a summation of what I will be doing.

  • Eating healthy; Honestly I’m sick of fast food these days, it simply isn’t good for me and doesn’t even taste that great. Time for more fruits and vegetables and healthy snacks.
  • Working out; More than just going to the gym I will be working out when I wake up, working on the 100 push ups challenge. Also going back to running on Saturday morning on my favorite 4 mile path to my old middle school.
  • Walking to school; I love driving but it is pointless when I can just walk to school. On B-days I have to drive because I have a class at another high school in the morning but other than that and staying after school I will be walking. I would normally drive to school everyday because I had to stay after school everyday but these days I don’t need to anymore.
  • Read

Since AP tests are now over for me and I am a senior there isn’t much going on anymore. What I’m really changing back to is my Summer style of life full of working out, eating healthy and kicking back with some good books.

First Low Day In A While

  • It hasn’t stopped raining all week and when I thought it was sunny enough to go play disc golf, mother nature came down with some more rain. Had to stop play at hole 7, but I had the lead when we left so I guess I won? 7 holes doesn’t do a 18 hole course justice for deciding a winner.
  • Manny Ramirez, need I say more. But no matter what I still love the guy and will continue to cheer for him when he comes back to my Dodgers in July. Should be a very defining next 50 games for the Dodgers.

Funny thing is I’m more depressed about these two things than I am about Virginia Tech rejecting my appeal today. Then again Georgia Tech is better, so it’s understandable.

9 points (4-7 overall, 1-3 for 3′s), 4 Rebounds, 2 Assists

Somehow, someway, in some world I scored 9 points in my community league basketball game (Chantilly Youth Association). As I explained in a previous post, in the draft for basketball this year I was the second to last pick among the group of 80 some 12th graders. Seriously, I’m not good at basketball but it’s still fun to play organized ball.

I play on Mattfeld’s team and our opponents in this game was King’s team. Before the draft King was the team I wanted to be on because all my friends were on that team.  But this year they passed up on me with their last pick and decided to go with someone else. (Quick note; there is some history between Mattfeld and King because in the past few seasons everytime these two teams meet there is always a close game that comes down to end. Not only that but there is a good amount of hatred between the two teams because of the rivalry, so trash talking and hard fouls come with the package) Anyways back to me, this game was perfect for me to set my new personal best with 9 points. Playing the team I wanted to be on who decided not to draft me with their last pick and then coming out of nowhere with a great game. I couldn’t have asked for more.

But for the cherry on top, we won 63-60.

Chantilly Robotics Dodgeball Is Back

Every year at Chantilly High School there is a dodgeball tournament called “Chargerball” where groups of students can form teams to compete. Ever since it began in 2007 I have captained the Chantilly Robotics team in the competition.

2007: 0-8
2008: 5-3 (4 way tie for 8th seed in the playoffs, won the first sudden death 1v1, lost the second)
2009:???

In 2007 we had a horrible showing, basically making ourselves look like a bunch of nonathletic kids who build robots all day. But in 2008 we got our revenge and almost made the playoffs. On that day we made a statement.

Normally how I have always run this team is by picking kids from the robotics team but with little success I have started recruiting from outside team for the 2009 tournament. Chantilly Robotics Dodgeball (2009) will contain one official member (me) and 6 other temporary members.
