Band of the Month: November 2008

Howdy to all of my 4 readers out there!

Sorry I haven’t written in a while, alot has been going on these days. Those darn college applications and this whole senior year thing keeps taking up all of my free time. But as you can see I am back and hopefully the useless knowledge of my interests will continue to be updated on this webpage on a consistent basis. Anyways off to the post!

One thing that I’ve noticed alot is when people ask me about my taste in music 99.9% people have no idea about who the bands I like are and how amazing they are. So while working on my college applications a genius idea came along to post a new band every month that I like on my blog that needs to be shared with the world around me. All the bands I will be posting are indie bands and  are one’s that can’t be found on your local radio station. Anywho for November:

Bon Iver

it wasn’t planned. The goal was to hibernate.

Justin Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. Tailing from the swirling breakup of his long time band, he escaped to the property and surrounded himself with simple work, quiet, and space. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This special time slowly began feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus.

This slowly evolved into days filled with twelve-hour recording blocks, breaking only for trips on the tractor into the pines to saw and haul firewood, or for frozen sunrises high up a deer stand. All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song. The end result is, For Emma, Forever Ago, a nine-song album comprised of what’s been dubbed a striking debut by critics and fans alike… [To continue reading you can go to the source article bio listed on his  myspace music page http://www.mysapce.com/boniver]

I heard Bon Iver for the first time on my favorite Sirius Satellite station XMU (Formally Left of Center) channel 26. Normally when I’m listening to Sirius it is when I have no clue what to listen to but when I heard Bon Iver’s song “Skinny Love” it instantly caught my ear and got me interested in the band. You can be the judge for yourself by checking out his myspace music page. Stay tuned for December’s Band of the Month.

Statistics book joke #2

For some reason I’m really good at finding the hidden jokes from my book while doing my Statistics homework. This time rather than the joke being in the question, it’s in the answer from the back of the book.

#6.27 A BATTLE PLAN A general can plan a campaign to fight one major battle or three small battles. He believes that he has probability of 0.6 of winning the large battle and probability of 0.8 of winning each of the small battles. Victories or defeats in the small battles are independent. The general must win either the large battle or all three small battles to win the campaign. Which strategy should he choose?

(Answer) Fight one big battle: His probability of winning is 0.6, compared to (0.8)^3 = 0.512. (Or he could choose to try for a negotiated peace.)

…I’m on to you Statistics book with all of your dry humor and horrible grammar.

2008 Election

I’m not here to tell you my political views because this may cause a good portion of my 3 readers to stray away. But instead I’m going to talk about what I saw on CNN last night, was it just me or were there some freaking holograms? On top of everyone’s special touch screen boards which gives you access to every possible statistic used in elections, how unnecessary were the holograms from CNN. Then again I’m not going to lie it did sound pretty cool how they introduced everyone “We are about to beam in our correspondent from Chicago.” Now only if they can have some legit hologram where the person in the studio can actually see the person without looking at the monitors. Future of communication?

Halloween

If you watch the office you know that on this seasons episode “Employee Transfer” Pam walked into her job at corporate on Halloween dressed up, but she was the only one. That’s how I felt like last night, I thought everyone would be dressing up all crazy since it was Halloween but apparently only Chris V. and I got the message. Well anyways here is how ridiculous I looked in the crowd, now I look at it I don’t mind cause I got all the photographers attention at the game. But I’m never going to do this again.

(By the way my friend Joe, the person standing to the right of me, tried to dress up as me to the game. You can be the judge if he pulled it off or not)
