How the VHSL Football Ranking System Works

One thing that I have never understood about high school football in Virginia is how the ranking system works. That was until this past week when I contacted the LRG asking exactly how the system works. Today I got a response for him but since the question and answer was so good they got posted on digitalsports.com . So instead of me having to summarize how it works on my blog, here it is the from the man himself:

Chantilly Girls Volleyball

I’ll be honest with you when my friends Mike and Anthony invited me to the girls volleyball game against Westfield I was kind of skeptical about it. Personally I’m not that great at volleyball and I’ve never really watched it on TV before. This was until I went to my first game, after the first set I was hooked. The game is quite exciting to watch with high powered spikes and volleys that leave you at the edge of your seat. Speaking of seats the second reason why Chantilly Girls Volleyball is so much fun to watch is seeing the games from the “7th women” student section. Like in basketball with the “6th man” and football with the “12th man” is our schools “7th women.” The chants keep the game alive while Chantilly dominates teams on their current undefeated streak. My favorite chant was probably from last night against Robinson when one Robinson player got drilled in the face and I started a chant yelling “Where’s your head at!?” That was probably cruel but what ever it was fun. I wish I went to more games this year but I got into the sport just in time for playoffs which are right around the corner.

Happy Homecoming

This past week hasn’t been going well for me until last night. The Dodgers got knocked out of the playoffs, my car got keyed and I began to regret my decision about not going to my senior Homecoming. But everything began to turn around when I walked into my schools pep-rally and heard the song “New Noise” by The Refused playing through the speakers. I began to think about high school football because of how this song was played flawlessly in the movie “Friday Night Lights” when the Permian Panthers walked into the Astro Dome for the state championship. Once I heard this song my emotions instantly changed when I remembered that on this day there was a Chantilly Football game and how high school football always finds a way to keep my happy. After this everything started to fall into place for a great day; Skydivers brought the Chantilly flag into the stadium during the pep-rally, the 5 o’clock tail-gate was filled with food and fun, I got my second row seat in the student section around all of my friends and my favorite football team dominated the Fairfax Rebel’s 42 – 6 with a display of fireworks after every touchdown scored in the second half. Although I’m not going to homecoming this year, the performance Chantilly put on against the Rebel Pride is certainly enough to make up for it. I’ve already been to homecoming two times and they didn’t even come close to how great last night was. So while everyone is enjoying one of their highlights of the year at the homecoming dance, I have already had mine at the homecoming football game. Just look at what happened at the game by the numbers:

Roger Strittmatter (QB, #7): 4-6 Passing for 106 yards, 2 TD’s, 0 interceptions and a 149.3 QB rating

Torrian Pace (RB, #25): 6 Carries for 185 Yards and 3 TD’s

Kevin McGrath (RB, 31): 9 Carries for 90 yards and 1 TD

Mike Ryan (TE, #47): 3 Receptions for 100 yards and 2 TD’s

(This game easily meets requirement #1 of “The Perfect High School Football Game“)

Romo Hurt!

I’m not even going to start about how my Redskins played but all was not lost this weekend, Arizona beat Dallas. Although the Redskins lost, anytime Dallas loses is a good day and the icing on the cake for all of this is Tony Romo is out for 4 weeks. Eat it Dallas.

2-1-1

This past weekend I went 2-1-1.

  1. Dodgers swept the Cubs.
  2. Chantilly Lost to Oakton (although chantilly lost, the team is looking very good right now)
  3. SAT’s went well (that’s from my perspective, I don’t get my scores till later, so it receives a tie)
  4. Redskins beat Philadelphia

Key match ups for this week: Dodgers vs. Phillies, Chantilly vs. Robinson, Redskins vs. St. Louis and me vs. college applications.
