A win againsty Philly on sunday would certainly boost us up even more.

I Like English Class?

Never in my life have I imagined saying those 4 words. Before this year I have dreaded english class. Who wants to read books that you didn’t choose yourself and then write papers in a style that you don’t enjoy? FCPS might as well fill in the rest of the blanks when I’m completing a pre-designed structure essay than waste my time. For the last 3 years of high school I’ve gained absolutley nothing out of my english classes. (Sorry Mr. Thomas, Mr. Murphy and Ms. Conanan)

Enter senior year and a cavalier named Mr. Friedman. His philosophies of teaching english are based on learning how to write papers in your own natural style. Meaning your mind is free to write what it truly wants. Need to use curse words to make your statement? Go for it, you are only lying to the reader if you don’t write what you truly feel. With this new mentality I was pleased for the first time in my high school career with the essay I just recently turned it. The essay question was simple “What is your main goal for this year.” Like any FCPS student I began attacking the problem with pre-designed essay layouts and writing in such a predictable fashion that one could break down the components of my essay without even reading it. This is probably the main reason why I disliked writing so much is because the style in which I have to write for school is simply unnatural. Mr. Friendman simply told me to get rid of what I had and make it personal. Once the normal rules were taken away my second draft was exciting to write and the final was even more compelling. The product was a true creation of my mind with a first paragraph which will surprise every-reader. In one week my writing has progressed on a large scale and has propelled me into writing more blog posts. Thank goodness I didn’t take A.P. English this year and got Mr. Friedman.

Great Weekend

  1. The Dodgers Won the National League West
  2. Chantilly beat Herndon in dominating fashion
  3. Dominated my practice SAT’s
  4. Redskins beat the Cowboys

Key matchups for this week; Dodgers vs. Cubs, Chantilly vs. Oakton, Redskins vs. Philadelphia and Me vs. College Board.

The Pirate Version of Facebook

I know already that facebook is in a multitude of other languages but today while I was messing around with my profile page I noticed that you can change your language setting to “English (Pirate).” It does exactly what it sounds like, everything is changed to pirate talk. For example “logout” is “Abandon Ship” and “Activities” is “Things to do when there be no rum.”

Try it out!

Step 1) Scroll Down to the bottom of any facebook page (your home page, your profile page, etc.)

Step 2) Click on the blue highlighted link “English” and scroll down to “English (Pirate)”

Step 3) Enjoy facebook in pirate language!

List of priorities

  • Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball
  • Chantilly Football
  • Redskins Football
  • Schoolwork

These are the only four things in the world I care about right now.

The dumbest way to ask a question

From my statistics homework;

“1.44 (b): Maria’s science teacher is furious to discover that she has measured the cockroach lengths in inches rather than centimeters. (There are 2.54 cm in 1 inch) She gives Maria two minutes to report the mean and standard deviation of the 5 cockroaches in centimeters. Maria succeeded. Will you?”

iTunes 8

After playing with iTunes 8 for a day it surprisingly has some great upgrades but if I had to narrow it down to one it would easily be the “Genius Playlists.” When I listen to music it is simply based off mood and my 25 gig library and I have things intertwined for about 90% of the time. But for the other 10% of the time I have an unsure feeling of what I want to listen to. The shuffle is completely useless to me because all it’s good for is telling me what songs I don’t want to listen to. Well now with “Genius Playlists” this musical void is filled with intelligently generated playlists. By simply selecting a song and hitting the genius playlist button the magic Apple music fairies generate a playlist with songs similar to the original one you selected.

Thanks Apple!

Mid-year procrastination form.

Not even 2 weeks into school and I’m in mid-year procrastination form. All I had to today was english and stat homework. Rather than taking 1 hour it took 3! Seems I’m going to have to start getting focused, probably when I have my first test I will realize I’m in school.

But at least I accomplished some things while putting off my homework:

  1. Updated my fantasy football team
  2. Cleaned my desk
  3. Purchased a new English notebook
  4. Organized my English notebook
  5. Returned a book to the library
  6. Had a snack
  7. Created a new 404 error page (ex. http://shanrammah.com/brokenlink)
  8. Updated my blog

Turn of events

On Friday my favorite baseball team the Los Angeles Dodgers were 1.5 games back behind the Diamondbacks. That day they opened up a 3 game set with them and swept them! So now the Dodgers have a 1.5 game lead in the National League West with only 19 games left, all of which are against sub .500 teams. If the Dodgers make the playoffs 2 of our best players will be back in the line up from the disabled list, Rafael Furcal (ss) and Brad Penny (p). Is this the year? I don’t know but all I’m sure of is if the Dodgers make the playoffs they will be a force.

Looks like a good year.

For the first time in my schooling history I am pleased with my class schedule. I have already met all my teachers and they all seem pretty cool. There may be some language barrier between my stat teacher and I but after going through this same problem with Mrs. Chong (moon) for pre-cal sophomore year I think I can handle it. There are alot of things to say about my teachers but I’ll save both you and I time and just tell you my favorite. Hands down it is Mr. Mossholder for Multivariable Calculus, in one lesson he has become my favorite school math teacher. Also he’s a Dodgers fan so in the mornings our moods swing the same way. Sadly the class is at Centreville during 2nd period in the mornings but I don’t mind going out that far anymore knowing I’ll have as good a teacher as him. Although all the work I have put on myself will be a pain I am happy that I’ll be finishing my senior year on a good note.

(jumping jehosafats batman! I’m updating my blog every week!)
